What are office lenses?
Your optician, a friend or colleague may have recommended office lenses, but do you need them?
Office lenses (sometimes known as occupational or degressive lenses) are made with a variable prescription for the wearer to see reading and intermediate distances. Unlike varifocal lenses they have a large proportion of the lens dedicated to the reading prescription. Office lenses can be much more comfortable for the wearer to use if they spend a lot of time working on computers, reading, or drawing.
One of the big advantages of office-lenses over varifocal lenses is that the wearer doesn’t need to lift their chin to the same extent when reading. So people who wear office lenses can adopt a more natural posture when sitting at their desk.
Office-lenses can be set up to give the wearer different working distances to suit their occupation or hobby. Typicially office-lenses will be set to focus from reading distance (40 cm) to between 1.5 and 4 metres.
The only disadvantage with office lenses is that they cannot be used for driving or distance-vision so the wearer may require another pair of glasses to correct their vision for driving. Lots of wearers choose to have a pair of varifocals for everyday use and a separate pair of office glasses for work or hobbies.
